YOYO TRICK MOUNTS EVERY PLAYER NEEDS TO KNOW COVER

A fundamental part of learning intermediate yoyo tricks is to master mounts. Mounts are the starting position and first step to most tricks and combos. Among the numerous that exist, here are three yoyo trick mounts every player needs to know.

1. Split Bottom Mount

The Split Bottom Mount is one of the most commonly used mounts in frontstyle yoyo play. Once this is mastered, you can unlock numerous yoyo tricks such as: Mach 5, Split the Atom, Boing-e-Boing, and Pop N’ Fresh.

How to get into Split Bottom Mount:

  1. Throw the yoyo frontstyle.
  2. With your non-throw hand, place your index finger to the middle of the string.
  3. Place your throw hand index finger against the string, push so that the yoyo swings onto the string. This is the Split Bottom Mount!

2. Houdini Mount

Houdini Mount is similar to the Double or Nothing trick, however, it utilizes the thumb instead of only index fingers. You can perform tricks such as Gondola.

How to get into Houdini Mount:

  1. Start with a strong Breakaway.
  2. Use your non-throw hand thumb as the yoyo swings around similar to Double or Nothing.
  3. Swing the yoyo over your throw-hand index finger.
  4. Swing around and over your non-throw hand index finger and land the yoyo. This is the Houdini Mount!

3. Wrist Mount

Wrist Mount is a slightly more advanced mount that offers an endless range of advanced and custom tricks. Tricks such as Kwijibo and Magic Trick begin from here.

How to get into Wrist Mount:

  1. Start with a strong Breakaway.
  2. In one motion, swing the yoyo over your non-throw hand index finger then over your throw-wrist.
  3. Swing the yoyo around again over your non-throw hand index finger and land the yoyo onto the string in the middle.
  4. Drop the strings from your non-throw hand index finger. You are now in the wrist mount!

Mastering these three mounts—Split Bottom Mount, Wrist Mount, and Houdini Mount—is essential for any yoyo player aiming to further expanding their trick library. Each mount serves as the foundation for a wide variety of tricks, and they play a crucial role in the development of more advanced yoyo techniques. Good luck!
