Why Won’t My Yoyo Come Back Up?

If you find it difficult for your yoyo to come back up to your hand, there may be several possible reasons why this might happen. And we have some solutions for you to get your yoyo spinning back up to your hand!
Are you having issues with an automatic (responsive) yoyo or an unresponsive yoyo? Learn the differences here.
One of the most common reasons your yoyo won’t return to your hand is not having good string tension. Your string must not be tangled when you throw it.
Adjust your string tension. You can do this by letting the yoyo hang and spin naturally to loosen it, or by manually twisting the string to tighten it accordingly.
Over time, yoyo strings will wear out due to excessive use. To tell when your string is worn out, it has lost its vibrant color or has become excessively fuzzy.
Replace your string regularly. As a general rule, change your string every week or daily (depending on how frequently you play). Or whenever you notice fraying and discoloration.
A dirty or damaged bearing can prevent smooth spinning and affect the yoyo’s ability to return back up. Maintaining bearings regularly can help with its longevity.
Clean your bearing with lighter fluid in a small container. Lubricate it sparingly with thin yoyo lube (such as Long Spin Oil). If cleaning doesn’t help, you may need to replace the bearing.
The response system of pads within the yoyo might be worn out and are not gripping the string well enough.
Check your response pads. If the pads feel too smooth and not grippy enough, replace them.
Sometimes, the problem isn’t with the yoyo but with how you are throwing it.
