Read and learn all about yoyos and world of modern yoyoing.
The world of yoyo tricks is constantly evolving, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with a toy that has existed for generations. But throughout all the changes and innovations, one question keeps coming back:
Â
What’s the hardest yoyo trick?
Â
To answer that, let’s explain a quick history of yoyoing and how our definition of “hardest” has changed over time.
Back in the day—long before unresponsive bearings, slack tricks, and lacerations—loop-the-loop was the gold standard. It was the trick every kid needed to master, and doing it with both hands? That was the pinacle of yoyoing!
Â
Two-handed looping (also known as 2A) involves precise timing, control, and relentless practice. Today, this style of yoyo tricks is just as hard to do as it was when it began.
Once ball bearing yoyos emerged, 1A style of yoyoing became more popular. And as yoyo tech improved, especially with the introduction of transaxle yoyos and more stable designs, tricks began to evolve. One that stood out was Black Hops.
Â
Before the era of unresponsive yoyos and bind returns, Black Hops was notoriously one of the hardest yoyo tricks. You had to land multiple hop transitions in a row, cleanly, while avoiding the yoyo to snap back at yoy. The margin for error? Zero. The yoyo could snap back at any moment if not done correctly.
Everything changed when unresponsive yoyos became the standard. With the need to now do the trick Bind to return the yoyo, a new style emerged: slack tricks. Suddenly, players were manipulating loose string slacks and creating intricate combinations that did not cause the yoyo to suddenly snap back unexpectedly.
Â
This gave rise to an explosion of creativity. Today, new tricks involving like 1A slacks, whips, lacerations, and tech combos pushes the boundaries further than ever.
Â
But are these truly the hardest tricks?
Here’s the truth: the hardest yoyo trick is the one you’re learning right now.
Â
If you’re struggling with your first bind return, learning lacerations, or trying to hit a new freestyle combo, that’syour Everest. Difficulty is relative. What’s easy for one player may be their most difficult trick for another.
Â
And the best part about yoyoing is that the yoyo trick catalog grows every day, and much like words in a language, there’s no end in sight.
