You can perform this trick on both responsive (automatic) and unresponsive yoyos. It saves time, helps you restart quickly, and looks great in any combo. Best of all, it’s easier than most players expect. Let’s break it down.
What is the Wind Up Trick?
Wind Up is a fast method to bring your yoyo back to your hand. Instead of winding the string manually, you use a quick motion with your non-throw hand to spin the yoyo and send it upward in one second.
How to Perform the Wind Up Trick
- Get into Position
Hold the yoyo in your non-throw hand. Check that the string sits correctly on the axle. Keep your non-dominant hand ready to guide the motion. - Spin Backward
Swing the yoyo backward in one fast motion. Keep the string tight so the spin stays strong. - For a Responsive/Automatic Yoyo
Pull up and drop your hand in one smooth motion. Catch the yoyo as it shoots back up. - For an Unresponsive Yoyo
Perform an immediate bind to return the yoyo.
Practice and Patience
Wind Up feels simple, but your timing needs practice. Repeating the backward swing builds muscle memory and improves control. As the motion becomes natural, you’ll hit the trick smoothly and enjoy a fast, clean reset every time.
