Read and learn all about yoyos and world of modern yoyoing.
Metal yoyos are a favorite among many players for their speed, stability, and long spin time.
But if you’ve just upgraded from a plastic yoyo or picked one up for the first time, you might be surprised to find that it doesn’t come back to your hand with a simple tug.
That’s because most metal yoyos are unresponsive—and learning how to use them properly starts with mastering a trick called the Bind.
Unlike plastic responsive yoyos that return to your hand by tugging up, most metal yoyos are designed for unresponsive play. This means they won’t return on their own—you need to perform a Bind to bring them back.
This allows players to perform more complex string tricks without the yoyo snapping back at you unexpectedly. However, using an unresponsive metal yoyo requires a bit more technique and practice.
The Bind is an essential trick that allows you to return an unresponsive yoyo to your hand. Without it, you won’t be able to use your metal yoyo properly. Learn how to bind here.
There are multiple variations of the Bind, such as the Frontstyle Bind and the Sidestyle Bind, but all of them follow the same basic principle. Once you’ve mastered it, you’ll be able to confidently use any unresponsive yoyo—including metal ones.
Start slow. Metal yoyos tend to be heavier and more stable than plastic ones, making them ideal for learning string tricks and combos. Focus on clean string control and develop your technique without rushing through tricks. If you’re brand new to unresponsive play, don’t be discouraged—it takes time.
