5A yoyoing uses a counterweight in place of a finger loop. This opens up a whole new range of tricks where the string is not attached to your finger. New ariel combinations as the yoyo entirely leaves your land looks visually impressive.
What Is a Counterweight Yoyo?
A counterweight yoyo is simply a regular unresponsive yoyo with the finger loop removed and replaced with a small weight. When you throw the yoyo, both ends of the string move freely which allows you to perform tricks where your hands are free.
This style is known as 5A yoyo play, and it’s become one of the most exciting yoyo divisions.
How to Put a Counterweight on a Yoyo
There are two ends of the string. The end that goes around the ball bearing and the one around your finger.
- Thread the bearing string end through your counterweight hole.
- Place that string through the loop to secure the counterweight.
- Then put the string around the bearing and you’re all set!
How to Use a Counterweight Yoyo
When using a counterweight, your throwhand controls both the yoyo and the counterweight. You’ll need to:
Start with simple tricks like:
- Forward Pass Tosses
- Freehand Throws
- Around the Arm
From there, you can work your way up to more complex yoyo tricks like Beesting, Aerials, and Body Wraps.
