Read and learn all about yoyos and world of modern yoyoing.
If you’re new to yoyoing or a returning beginner player looking to pick it back up, you may be asking yourself, “How do I start?”. So we’ve compiled a list of five essential yoyo tricks that you need to know to move onto the next level!
The Sleeper is the foundation of all yoyoing. It involves throwing the yoyo down, letting it spin at the end of the string, and then returning the yoyo back to your hand. Mastering the technique of this trick is crucial in how to move forward with your skill. You must have a powerful and controlled throw when doing the Sleeper. The more powerful your throw, the longer your yoyo will spin for, and therefore, the more tricks you can do and the easier it will be to get the yoyo back to your hand.
Rock the Baby is a classic trick which can teach you how to utilize both of your hands to perform a trick and understand the gentle momentum when swinging the yoyo back and forth through the gap. You can also easily practice this trick while the yoyo is not spinning to get a feel for the proportions and swing.
Once you master this trick, you can later move onto more complex style of tricks which are performed in front of you.
Eiffel Tower is an impressive picture trick that is perfect to show off your technical skills as a beginner! Knowing this trick can help you understand the importance of intricate string combinations for later in intermediate play. Similar to Rock the Baby, you can practice this trick while the yoyo is not spinning.
Breakaway is a fundamental throw to learn as the majority of yoyo tricks are performed from here. Instead of throwing the yo-yo straight down, you throw to the side and swing the yoyo in front of you, the returning it back to your hand. This may feel awkward at first compared to the classic Sleeper. But once you master this motion, it will open endless trick possibilities for you.
The Bind is the most important trick you NEED to know to transition you into more intermediate style of play. This trick requires a UNRESPONSIVE yoyo to complete. Using the Arrow yoyo can be a great choice as it automatically comes with a responsive bearing and an extra unresponsive bearing to switch.
This trick allows you to return an unresponsive yoyo back to your hand. This is due to that the larger ball bearing inside will allow you to do more complex trick combinations without the yoyo snapping back at you. This trick involves wrapping the string around the yoyo’s axle while pinching the loop with your non-throw hand. The friction in-between the gap will cause the yoyo to move up and return to your hand.
Once you have mastered this trick, you are ready to move onto more intermediate level of tricks!
Remember, the key to mastering these tricks is practice. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t get them right away. With patience and persistence, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you progress. To make this learning process easier, the Skill Addicts app can help you progress.
