Read and learn all about yoyos and world of modern yoyoing.
Intermediate yoyo tricks help bridge the gap between beginner play and more advanced skill. They look impressive, feel satisfying to perform, and are much easier to learn than most players expect. Below are three intermediate tricks that look hard but are actually beginner-friendly once you understand the motion.
Pinwheel is a great intermediate trick you can add to almost any combo. It teaches you how to manage the yoyo’s momentum, so you can build stronger, more controlled throws without needing to land on the string right away. Once you learn it, you’ll throw harder, extend spin times, and open the door to more complex tricks. Plus, it looks amazing in motion.
Start with a Breakaway, but intentionally miss the Trapeze. Use your index finger to guide the yoyo in a circular “pinwheel” path in front of you. The visual effect stands out immediately, and with practice, this move becomes a natural starting element for many combos.
Begin with a front sleeper. Lift the yoyo up the string using your non-throw hand, then pinch the string near the top while leaving a bit of slack. Swing the yoyo forward to create the pinwheel motion.

Elevator creates the illusion of the yoyo “climbing” the string, and it already looks great on its own. Adding a Pinwheel at the end makes the trick look even more dynamic.
Throw a sleeper, then lift the string with your non-throw index finger. Guide the yoyo upward along the string. Once it reaches the top, pinch the string and perform a Pinwheel. Release afterward and return the yoyo to your hand. This smooth combo boosts the trick’s visual impact.
Boomerang looks advanced but becomes simple once you understand the motion. The more you repeat it, the cleaner and more dramatic the movement becomes.
Start with the Elevator setup, but stop when the yoyo reaches the middle of the string. Slide your finger down the string and push the yoyo outward. It will bounce back toward you in a “boomerang” motion. After you feel confident with the rebound, finish by catching the yoyo behind your head.
Proceed carefully with behind-the-head tricks. Only attempt them after you’ve practiced the motion thoroughly.
