How to Fix a Yoyo That Won’t Come Back Up

How to Fix a Yoyo That Won’t Come Back Up

If your yoyo won’t come back up, here are some ways on how to fix it. In most cases, the solution is simple. However, the fix depends on this important question:

  1. Is your yoyo responsive or unresponsive?

Once you identify those two things, troubleshooting becomes much easier.

Is Your Yoyo Responsive or Unresponsive?

Before adjusting anything, determine what type of yoyo you’re using.

Responsive Yoyo

A responsive yoyo returns with a simple tug.

Beginner models like the YoYoFactory ONE or YoYoFactory Arrow are designed this way.

If a responsive yoyo isn’t returning, it’s usually caused by:

  • Throw technique
  • String setup
  • Lack of bearing lubrication

Unresponsive Yoyo

On the other hand, an unresponsive yoyo will not return with a tug. Instead, you must perform a bind.

Models like the YoYoFactory Bullseye or YoYoFactory Shutter require this advanced technique.

If your unresponsive yoyo won’t return, the issue is typically:

  • Binding technique
  • Bearing condition
  • Worn response pads

Beginner Fixes (Most Common Problem)

If you’re using a beginner responsive yoyo, the issue is often technique rather than hardware.

1. You’re Not Throwing With Enough Power

First of all, power matters.

The harder and straighter you throw:

  • The longer it spins
  • The more stable it stays
  • The easier it returns

A weak throw results in a weak spin, which makes returning difficult. Therefore, focus on a strong, straight downward throw.

2. The Yoyo Isn’t Fully Wound

Next, check your wind.

Make sure:

  • The string is wound tightly
  • There are no loose gaps
  • The string is evenly wrapped

Even a slightly loose wind can dramatically reduce spin time.

3. The String Is Mounted Incorrectly

Another common mistake involves string orientation.

When holding the yoyo:

  • The string must come off the top
  • It should roll over the top when thrown
  • It must be attached securely to your middle finger

If the string comes from the bottom, the yoyo will not respond properly.

4. You’re Not Throwing Straight

Additionally, a tilted throw causes friction. As a result, the yoyo loses spin quickly and may not return.

Practice throwing straight down. Clean technique often solve most beginner issues instantly.

If It’s Not Technique, Check the Accessories

If your throw is strong and your yoyo still won’t come back up, inspect the setup. This typically applies to unresponsive yoyos.

1. String is Frayed or Worn

Over time, strings wear out.

A frayed string can:

  • Slip during return
  • Reduce responsiveness
  • Get stuck in the bearing

If it looks fuzzy, replace it. Fresh string often solves the problem immediately.

2. The Bearing Needs Maintenance

Yoyo Ball bearings require occasional care.

For Responsive Yoyos:

If your unresponsive yoyo won’t bind:

  • Clean the bearing
  • Add a very small amount of Long Spin Oil for bearing longevity
  • Replace the bearing if necessary

However, avoid over-lubricating. Too much oil can cause the opposite problem.

3. Response Pads Are Worn (Unresponsive Yoyos)

If binds feel weak, your pads may be worn out. In that case, replace the response pads regularly.

4. Axle or Assembly Issues

Finally, check for mechanical issues.

For example:

  • The axle may be loose
  • The halves may be uneven
  • The yoyo may be overtightened

Carefully unscrew and reassemble evenly. Do not overtighten.
