Read and learn all about yoyos and world of modern yoyoing.
Every year on June 6th, yoyo players around the world celebrate National Yoyo Day—a tribute to one of the world’s oldest and most beloved toys. But how did this yoyo toy become a part of our culture? And why June 6th?
Yoyos are thought to date back thousands of years to ancient Greece and China, however, the modern yoyo’s rise began in the 20th Century.
According to Lucky’s Collectors Guide to 20th Century Yo-Yos, the yoyo as we know it made its way to the United States in the 1920s, thanks to Pedro Flores, a Filipino immigrant. He began mass-producing wooden yoyos, introducing the American public to the art of “yoyoing.”
His idea quickly caught on.
In 1929, Donald F. Duncan bought the rights to the yoyo trademark from Flores. And Duncan Toys Company began manufacturing yoyos. Duncan was born on June 6th, which is why this date was chosen to commemorate National Yoyo Day!
Duncan revolutionized yoyo’s popularity. He marketed the toy through newspapers, launched nationwide competitions, and fostered yoyo communities long before the internet existed. His techniques laid the groundwork for the yoyo boom in mid-20th century America—tactics that are still in use today, now amplified through social media platforms and global online communities.
What better way to celebrate National Yoyo Day than with a yoyo that pays tribute to its origins?
We recommend the Wooden Boho by YoYoFactory Europe, a beautifully crafted classic wooden yoyyo that captures the feel and charm of the original models used in Pedro Flores’ and Donald Duncan’s eras. The Boho isn’t just for collectors; it’s fully functional, smooth, and ideal for anyone looking to connect with the classic roots of this toy.
Take a moment to spin back in time. Connect with the yoyo community online, learn some new tricks on SkillAddicts, and try a classic like the Boho. National Yoyo Day is more than a celebration of a toy—it’s a nod to a timeless tradition of creativity, skill, and joy.
Happy Yo-Yo Day from all of us at YoYoFactory Europe!
